WHIPPOORWILL was sent to me by the author for review and because I had reviewed his first book, I was happy to say yes to his new project.   The story is a love story about a 14 year old southern gregarious little girl who is quite protected on her father’s Louisiana planation.  She can climb trees and fight with the boys, breaking one young man’s nose, but she doesn’t truly understand that the family owns slaves and one has been assigned to her to turn her into a lady with ruffles and frills.

Ceci has a coming out party and is introduced into society at a fancy ball, it is here that she meets Trent Sinclaire, who is a student at West Point Academy.  Boston is a long way from the planation and yet still the two fall in love.  When her father, sister and nephew are killed during the early fighting, Ceci joins a women’s intelligence gathering group to spy for the Confederacy and even while engaged to Sinclaire who is fighting for the north, she holds various positions to send information back to the generals. Her vengeance is dynamic.    During her efforts she meets President Lincoln and her revenge motives begin to slip away though she is not able to stop the battle of Gettysburg she is able to save her fiancé’s life!

About the Author:

With Historical Romance as his preferred genre, Robert has continued to write for several years.  Many of his short stories have appeared in various national periodicals and magazines. His debut novel DANCE THE MOON DOWN, a story of love against adversity during the First World War, gained him considerable critical praise, being voted book of the month by WALL to WALL books.  His second novel WHIPPOORWILL tells of a passionate affair between a young southern woman and a northern man at the beginning of the American Civil War.  His is single and lives and works in Hertfordshire. (book cover)

Although the author appears to be from England, this romance is like much Southern history lessons, it does not truly tackle the issue of slavery as being the focus of the war.  It is more significant an issue than State’s Rights, but it is still a lesser story line. We are captured by the reaction to loss of family.

I believe young women would be encouraged by Ceci’s tale and adventures and those who love romance would be delighted with this story and the interesting ideas shared by the women in the story.    I believe that Ceci did not get much education and that seems to be an issue ignored in the story – She could read and write, she was protected from the news of the day, whereas other women seemed to know more of what was reality.

I had a bit of a problem with the PDF file that was sent to me to read as it would keep shutting down during the reading process and I had to go back and discover my place over and over again.   It did hold my interest enough to put up with this trend and I see that AMAZON is temporarily out of stock with this book.  One might still wish to put it on the reading list and check with libraries.  It is apparently available on Kindle.
